Last updated: 29 Aug 2025 • A plain-language summary of how BackPack works for families.
What BackPack is
A private student app for Tasks, Schedule/Calendar, Diary, homework photo help (OCR), and an AI chat with two modes: Study and Unload.
BackPack is not therapy or emergency services. For emergencies, contact local services immediately.
What parents/guardians can and cannot see
By default you cannot see your child’s Diary, Tasks, Schedule, or AI chats. These are stored locally on the device.
Alerts are the exception: if our safety system detects critical red flags, we may email the linked parent/guardian. We do not do routine monitoring or broad content sharing.
How alerts work (safety first, privacy intact)
Entries are screened for serious risk phrases/patterns (e.g., self-harm, credible threats, exploitation).
Only high-severity matches trigger a parent/guardian email. Lower-severity signals do not notify by default.
Alerts contain minimal necessary context to act; they are not a full content dump.
Immediate danger? BackPack cannot contact emergency services. If you believe a child is at risk, call local emergency numbers right away.
Linking a parent/guardian
Parent/guardian contact is linked to the student account inside the app (managed from Profile).
Optional paid alerts are activated by the parent/guardian on our website (PayPal checkout). No purchases occur in the app.
Privacy by design
No third-party ads or marketing trackers.
Diary, Tasks, and Schedule are stored on the device. AI chats and homework photos are processed by our safety-focused backend strictly to provide replies and enforce safety.
All transmissions use HTTPS/TLS encryption.
You can request account/data deletion at any time: Delete account.
Device permissions we use
Camera / Photos: for homework image uploads (OCR). Optional.
Notifications: for schedule reminders you create. No marketing pushes.
Payments (parents only)
Optional paid features are purchased outside the app via PayPal by a parent/guardian—never by a student device.
See Billing & Refunds for auto-renewals, cancellations, and refunds.
Data control
Local data stays on the device until removed by the user (Profile or device storage settings).
Server-side account/link records can be deleted on request: Delete account.
